C&rsquo;\u00e9tait l&rsquo;un des derniers clippers construits avant les navires \u00e0 propulsion \u00e0 vapeur. Le nom de Cutty Sark est d\u00e9riv\u00e9 du po\u00e8me \u0093Tam Oshanter\u0094 de Robert Burns et signifie jupe courte en Ecossais.<\/p>\n<p>Le Capitaine Willis avait insist\u00e9 pour construire ce bateau avec les meilleurs mat\u00e9riaux mais \u00e7a a entra\u00een\u00e9 la faillite de ses b\u00e2tisseurs. Denny Brothers, qui repris le chantier, supervisa son ach\u00e8vement.<\/p>\n<p>Le Cutty Sark attira l&rsquo;admiration de Londres par la d\u00e9votion et l\u0092ing\u00e9niosit\u00e9 de son \u00e9quipage dans la mesure o\u00f9 il fallut construire des gouvernails de fortune \u00e0 deux reprises lorsqu\u0092elle avait perdu son gouvernail d\u00fb a des vents violents. Elle couvrit un p\u00e9riple de 16 000 miles en 119 jours.<\/p>\n<p>Avec l&rsquo;arriv\u00e9e des bateaux \u00e0 vapeur et l&rsquo;ouverture du canal de Suez, les clippers sont devenus moins \u00e9conomiques, et en 1878, ils n\u0092\u00e9taient plus pr\u00e9sents sur le commerce du th\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>Le Cutty Sark connut un certain nombre d&rsquo;accidents entre 1878 et 1883. Par ailleurs, un capitaine (Capitaine Wallace) atteint de folie a saut\u00e9 par-dessus bord.<\/p>\n<p>En 1883, le clipper fit le voyage retour avec une cargaison de laine, de l&rsquo;Angleterre \u00e0 l&rsquo;Australie (sous les ordres du capitaine W. Moore) par le Cap de Bonne-Esp\u00e9rance en 79 jours.<\/p>\n<p>Richard Woodget, qui pris la rel\u00e8ve de Moore devint par la suite le commandant le plus c\u00e9l\u00e8bre du Cutty Sark. Sa meilleure course fut en 1888, lorsqu\u0092il fit le voyage en 69 jours, reduisant d\u0092une dizaine de jours le record pr\u00e9c\u00e9dent.<\/p>\n<p>Le voilier accomplit son dernier voyage en Australie en 1895. Il fut vendu \u00e0 JA Ferreira \u00e0 Lisbonne puis, quatre ans plus tard, \u00e0 la CIA de Navega\u00e7\u00e3o au Portugal et rebaptis\u00e9 Maria di Amparo.<\/p>\n<p>En 1922, il \u00e9tait \u00e0 Falmouth, quand le capitaine Wilfred Dowman l\u0092a rep\u00e9r\u00e9. Il acheta le navire, le ramena en Angleterre \u00e0 ses propres frais et restitua son nom c\u00e9l\u00e8bre. Il fut restaur\u00e9 et utilis\u00e9 comme un bateau de formation \u00e0 Falmouth.<\/p>\n<p>Le Cutty Sark a connu une renomm\u00e9e internationale depuis 1923, surtout lorsque les vignerons londoniens Berry Bros &amp; Rudd, Ltd ont choisi le nom de Cutty Sark pour leur Scotch Whisky.<\/p>\n<p>A la mort de Wilfred Dowman en 1936, sa veuve fit de son navire un bateau pour la formation sur la Tamise. En 1952, la Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 de Preservation du Cutty Sark s\u0092est r\u00e9unie sous l&rsquo;\u00e9gide de Frank Carr, directeur du Mus\u00e9e national de la Marine et en 1954, le Cutty Sark a \u00e9t\u00e9 ouvert comme un mus\u00e9e \u00e0 Greenwich.<br \/>\nDeux ans apr\u00e8s son ouverture au public, le Cutty Sark commen\u00e7a son parrainage de courses pour l\u0092\u00ab International
