About the HMS Belfast:

Originally a Royal Navy light cruiser, The HMS Belfast spent 25 years in active service and saw several wars, before she was brought to London and moored on the River Thames. Currently operating as a museum ship, she is a popular landmark and tourist attraction in London.

The HMS Belfast was amongst one of the largest warships built in Belfast, Ireland. Her importance and uniqueness was reaffirmed as she was chosen to be the first ship in the Royal Navy to be named after the capital city of Belfast.

After her launch on St Patrick’s Day in 17 March of 1938, the HMS Belfast was commissioned shortly after to aid in the Second World War. On 6th June 1944, she was one of the leading vessels which carried out Operation Overlord; a plan made by Western allies to regain the control of the occupied areas of Northern France, against Germany. Aside from targeting opposing German ships and supporting the landing of troops in France, the HMS Belfast also served as a sick bay and treated casualties on board. After the end of the Second World War, HMS Belfast served during the Korean War before entering reserve in 1963.

About the model:

This model wooden ship is scratch-built with a remarkable level of craftsmanship, using the traditional technique of plank-on-frame construction. To ensure that there is a high level of quality and detail, each stage of the construction process is carefully monitored and takes several weeks to complete. The hulls and bridges are constructed exclusively out of hand-picked hardwoods. The model ship has been sanded and vanished in several layers, in order to create a smooth finish. Details are replicated using hand-stitched leather & fabric upholstery, and polished brass & metal finishes. The team of master craftsmen make use of the skills and expertise developed over many years, to ensure that this model is identical to the original.

This model is not a kit and is ready for display. The model is mounted on a solid wooden base and includes a brass plate.

Our readymade models are built by specialist artisan partners using a combination of traditional woodworking techniques and modern manufacturing methods, including CNC machining, laser cutting, and 3D printing. This blend of craftsmanship and technology allows for high levels of detail and consistency across our range. Every piece is inspected for quality before dispatch.

Our readymade models are constructed from a combination of materials depending on the model and manufacturer. The hull and main structural components are typically built from wood – commonly lime, walnut, or mahogany – while masts, spars, and finer structural elements use a mix of wood and metal. Rigging is made from thread or cord, and smaller fittings such as cannons, anchors, and deck hardware are usually cast in metal or formed from resin. Some components may also incorporate laser-cut or 3D-printed parts where precision detailing is required. Display bases and name plaques are generally finished in wood with brass or metal hardware.
